Facilities, Security & Transportation Subcommittee Meeting  - May 29, 2019

A meeting of the Facilities, Transportation & Security Subcommittee was held on May 29, 2019 at 6:35 pm in the Coddington Building. Present were Mr. Anthony Andronico, Mr. Paul Bregoli, Mr. Doug Gutro, Mrs. Kathryn Hubley, Mrs. Emily Lebo, and Mr. James DeAmicis, Chair. Also attending were Superintendent Richard DeCristofaro, Ms. Maura Papile, Ms. Erin Perkins, Ms. Madeline Roy, Mr. Keith Segalla; and Ms. Laura Owens, Clerk.

Dr. DeCristofaro previewed the opening of South~West Middle School on Monday, June 3. The move of materials from Sterling is ongoing this week. Students and teacher orientation in the new building are happening every day this week.

On Monday, students will gather outside by homeroom at Sterling Middle School on Granite Street. The students and staff will be led by the Quincy Fire Department and the Quincy-North Quincy marching band down Granite Street to Water Street to Roberts Street and into the new building. Students will receive t-shirts, notebooks, string backpacks. There will be a cookout and activities. On Friday, May 31, there will be a goodbye to Sterling day.

Mr. DeAmicis thanked Dr. DeCristofaro and the City and the Leadership Team for seeing the project through, it is such an opportunity for the city.

Dr. DeCristofaro reviewed the updates to high school security, this year Quincy Public Schools has reinforced the security presence at the back door of both buildings. Over the summer, the front doors at Quincy High School will be adjusted so the vestibule doors will have locks installed and visitors will be buzzed from the security area into the school. At North Quincy High School, there will be changes to move the Security desk into the area between the two doors. Conversations need to happen with the Quincy Fire Department and Building Department to be sure that emergency egress is not being affected. Commissioner Hines working with Superintendent DeCristofaro to move the project forward.

Mrs. Hubley asked about the Hunt Street entrance at North Quincy High School, students will still be able to enter from this side of the building as well.

Mr. DeAmicis asked for a follow up on the high school security upgrades in September 2019.

Mr. Bregoli made a motion to adjourn the Facilities, Transportation & Security Subcommittee at 6:45 pm. Mr. Gutro seconded the motion and on a voice vote, the ayes have it.
